Workshops

Our Pledge

Our workshops are renowned for their sense of wellbeing, unexpectedness, and creativity.

When we began GymJam, we wanted to make sure that every space we held was human, and free of expectation.

Free of expectation to be ‘good at creating’, to be ‘somebody’, or to be a ‘talented artist’.

Often in our industry, workshops can be ‘unspoken auditions’, putting huge pressure on artists who pay for the privilege to be in those spaces. Not with us.

Come as you are, that is all we expect.

We run a variety of workshops, and craft bespoke modules for education, companies, and groups.

Our Sandbox Sessions are unlocked creative spaces where we collide GymJam’s practice with another practitioner to push the boundaries of what a workshop can offer.

Sandbox Sessions

Collaborative by nature. Often unorthodox.

Always a riot.

In the past we have collided physical theatre with hip-hop & beatboxing, film-making, live sound artists, and more. We want to push the form of what devising and creating new work can look like.

They can be one day to week long adventures, and each one is unique. If demanded, we repeat them.

So far we haven’t run a Sandbox that hasn’t sold out, want to facilitate one with us, or participate in one? Check our feed for the latest updates, or get in touch!

Our Creative SWEAT workshops are three hour to whole day creative blasts, full of provocations to re-set, re-charge and up-skill your devising and physical theatre practice.

Creative SWEAT

Sweat.

Create.

Reflect.

A typical workshop involves:

  • A sweaty warm-up (clue’s in the name)

  • Skills practice

  • Quickfire devising techniques

We end every session with a chance to re-direct the work we make as a group, to flex your creative muscles.

We treat your students as a temporary professional ensemble

This enables them to gain experience that is relevant in the real world of entertainment and theatre making.

We are focused on wellbeing

We offer onboarding and wellbeing riders to enable access and awareness of your students and the teams needs.

Don’t just take our word for it, hear some testimonials.

We work with educational institutions to deliver bespoke workshops and modules specific to your needs.

Education

At Essex College we have been working with Vanessa and Lucy to craft a devising module for their final year students, a blend of dancers, performers and directors.

We were lucky enough to receive some feedback at the end of our previous devising module with them.

This has been our second year working with GymJam, and it has been a fantastic experience!

We wanted a company who was bringing something really fresh to the table in terms of physical work... We wanted collaborators who were interested in developing young artist’s voices. That is what we found with Gavin and Will.’

The students have a voice with GymJam, they are allowed to be inventive, to experiment, to try, and fail, and fail again. They use a lot of skills they wouldn’t have otherwise learnt, and they engage the students in a way that is just so lovely to see... because it is opening up their world to how they can move out of education, effectively, into the industry in a way they can understand.

GymJam are really moving the face of, particularly physical work, in a direction that in the UK hasn’t really been seen before.

It’s very different to anything! Haha, but in like, a really good way. It’s, a way of looking at [creating work] differently. To have the workshops, then see how we make the show together, it allows you to connect the dots from A to B. And I’ve had to think differently about how I work.
